What We Offer | |

Library Communication Strategies (LCS) offers a unique combination of skills, experience and perspective that can benefit many libraries and library groups. Its principals Peggy Barber and Linda Wallace have worked in library communications at the national, state and local levels. We also have a strong network of outstanding and affordable experts in fields such as fundraising, research, media, design and printing who know and love libraries almost as much as we do. Marketing/Communication PlanningWho are your library's customers? Potentially everyone, right? But few libraries have the time or money to mount the type of advertising campaign needed to reach that potential audience. LCS can develop strategic, long and short range marketing/communication programs that support your library's overall goals and address special needs. Working closely with you, we will research the library's external and internal environments and identify clear goals, key messages, target audiences, outreach strategies and evaluation techniques that are doable, affordable and effective. Communications AuditsWhat do your community or campus leaders, members of the media, users and nonusers really think about your library? A valuable tool for marketing, fundraising and communication planning, the communication audit provides objective, professional input on all aspects of your library's external communication using interviews with key members of the community, library staff and board, focus groups, questionnaires, review of print and electronic publications, and other evaluation mechanisms. The final report will suggest strategies for building on strengths and addressing any weaknesses. Audits can also include or focus on internal communication with key groups such as staff, volunteers and board members. Message DevelopmentDoes your library have a key messageone that briefly and colorfully conveys the essence of your library's service? It should. LCS can help you define or refine a core message that provides a foundation for all library communications. We will also help develop key messages that address special needs or concerns and create a message sheet that supports library spokespeople, staff and advocates in delivering your library's message. CampaignsLCS will develop campaigns, including theme, special events, promotional materials, media and outreach strategies, focused on a particular event such as the opening of a new library, library card sign-up, the introduction of a new service, membership promotion, anniversary or bond campaign. |
AdvocacyLibraries and library groups have many causes they may wish to advocate such as literacy, intellectual freedom, increased funding, or a particular piece of legislation. While all library staff have a role to play, the best advocates are Friends, library users and community leaders who are passionate and can articulate the library message. LCS can advise you on how to mobilize, train and nurture an advocacy network at the local or state levels. LCS can tailor workshops for your staff or association on a range of communications and marketing topics, including strategic planning, media relations, effective writing for print and electronic media, and media relations. CopywritingWe know and love libraries. Telling their story is second nature to us. We also know that all libraries are local and that each library has its own story to tell. Whether it's an annual report, Web site, brochure, or news release, LCS will help you communicate what is unique about your library. Fundraising and GrantsmanshipIt all begins with a clear mission and a compelling case statement. We provide advice, planning and expert contacts for library fundraising, including grant funding, sponsorships, campaign planning, special events and library foundations. PublicationsEvery organization needs a consistent, graphic look. Does your library or organization have one? Are your publications attention-getting and readable? How you package your messagein print and onlineis critical for it to have impact. LCS can help you manage print and Web production from planning, writing and design through printing and distribution. Spokesperson CoachingIn today's media savvy world, it's not just what you say but how you say it. LCS offers coaching and instruction for individuals and groups in how to deliver the library message effectively in media interviews and presentations to groups. Topics covered include "the sound bite," how to stay in control, handling tough questions, make up and dress, body language and other techniques for effective personal presentation. Role-playing provides opportunities to receive and give feedback. Videotaping can be arranged if desired. WorkshopsLCS can tailor workshops for your staff or association on a range of communications and marketing topics, including strategic planning, effective writing for print and electronic media, and media relations. |
