Yes, it's a little expensive, but well worth it. Borrow it from the library! Brinckerhoff has clear, step by step ideas about identifying and understanding your markets, considering the competition, needs vs. wants and lots more. Practical and interesting. Secrets of Word-of-Mouth Marketing. George Silverman, American Management Association, 2001, $17.95. Silverman says traditional advertising doesn't have the impact it once did, and makes a great case for word-of mouth. This is good news and a practical strategy for libraries, since we couldn't afford traditional advertising anyway. On the Web...Research Millennium Library Survey, conducted by Godbe Research Associates for the Silicon Library System This study of consumer's in California's Bay area was reported in April 2000, but the results remain VERY relevant for libraries all over the country. You'll find interesting library research data and tips on this site provided by the Colorado State Library. We especially like the "Community Analysis Scan Form" (you'll find it listed under "tools" on the home page). Two new studies reflect increasing use of libraries and the high value placed on libraries by members of the public. This news release from April 2002 has links to the studies and other documents. New & Exciting Cerritos launches the Experience Library This new Southern California library opened in March 2002, is a.k.a "an amusement park for the mind." From its stunning exhibits, including a 40-foot authentic Tyrannasaurus Rex to entirely new patterns of customer service, there is much to admire and learn from Cerritos. Check it out. PR, Marketing & Branding The best TV show for kids that has come along in years, this PBS gem takes place in a library and is all about reading. Their team worked with libraries and ALA to develop the show. It's ours. Own it! Use it! Don't reinvent the wheel! ALA makes it easy to "brand" your library with its @your library campaign. The goal is to build public awareness of libraries and to update the image of libraries and librarians for the 21st century. You'll find strategies, sample publicity materials, facts and figures, ready-to-use art and more. Terrific online newsletter with ideas, strategies, tips, updates on book/movie tie-ins. downloadable art and more. Creative and practical from someone who knows libraries. This Chicago consulting firm is dedicated to creating "customer evangelists." Their focus on word-of-mouth and non-traditional marketing is refreshing. They produce a free e-mail newsletter that is full of good ideas, and well worth reading. This isn't all about libraries....which makes it all the better.
